"The Oldest Post in Texas". Located along the North River Walk at 10th and Avenue B. The coords get you to the front porch. Notice the historical marker on the wall. The cache is handicap accessible and for security is located inside the VFW Post under the guest sign-in log on the floor. You will see it straight ahead as you walk in the door. The hours are Monday 4PM till 2AM Tuesday-Saturday 12PM till 2AM and Sunday 12PM till 12AM
I am very pleased with this cache for both it's patriotic and historical values. Chartered on June 15, 1917, VFW Post 76 is in a Victorian style house built in 1904. Originally the house belonged to Van Petty and was designed by Atler B. Ayers, the designer of the Tower Life Building. The house is open to the general public. The VFW Post's motto is to "Honor the dead by Helping the Living".
The theme for this cache is patriotism. There are 6 patriotic geocoins permanently mounted in the cache to be discovered. This cache is a patriotic themed cache so swap accordingly. Watch out for the two ghosts!!!! Cache is a large ammo can with patriotic swag, log and pen, located under the sign in table.
I have the Post Commander and Quartermaster's permission to place this cache. . Their names are posted in the hall going up to the stairs. Retrieve the cache, sit at a table and relax and enjoy the cache. Some one might be there that doesn't know about geocaching so tell them, there are a lot of folks here. but they are friendly and most know about the cache.
7/29/13 Replaced the ammo can that was stolen with 6 geocoins that were permanently mounted inside, with a shiny new one half filled with concrete!!!!!! There are now copies of coins to discover inside the lid.
