La Cote 112 (en
anglais : Hill 112) est une petite hauteur, à approximativement 10
km au sud-ouest de Caen, près d'Esquay-Notre-Dame, juste au dessus
d'une jonction routière (D8) et qui fut un lieu de combats majeurs
entre les troupes allemandes et les troupes anglo-canadiennes
pendant plus de 7 semaines de juin à juillet 1944 durant la
bataille de Normandie.
La bataille...
Le contingent britannique comprenait les hommes de la 49th Polar
Bear Division, les 15th Scottish, 11th Armoured, 43rd Wessex, 53rd
Welsh, 7th Armoured et 9th Armoured RTR ainsi que de nombreuses
autres unités soit au total plus de 63 000 hommes sur une période
de plus de sept semaines. L'intention des commandants alliés dont
Montgomery, était de stopper les Panzerdivisions allemandes,
estimées à sept, sur ce front alors que les Américains faisaient
route vers Cherbourg pour se saisir du port, ces derniers n'ayant
sur leur route qu'une seule Panzerdivision devant eux.
Ce n'est qu'après la prise de Cherbourg, lorsque les Américains
parvinrent enfin à percer le front allemand, fin de juillet, lors
de l'opération Cobra, que l'encerclement de l'armée allemande à
Chambois se produisit. Les Allemands se retirèrent alors de la
colline et le 53rd Welsh en prit le contrôle. Les pertes durant
cette période se montèrent à environ 25 000 hommes et 500 chars
britanniques. La Cote 112 fut un point stratégique important pour
la bataille de Caen. Un mémorial avec un char Churchill et autre
mémorial dédié au 43e régiment anglais du Wessex rappellent ces
combats.

Operation Jupiter was an attack launched by the British Second
Army's VIII Corps on 10 July. The objective of the attack was to
capture the villages of Baron-sur-Odon, Fontaine-Étoupefour,
Chateau de Fontaine and recapture Hill 112. Following the capture
of these objectives the Corps would then capture Éterville and the
village of Maltot and the ground up to the River Orne. Tanks from
the 4th Armoured Brigade, supported by infantry, would then advance
through the captured ground and secure several further villages to
the west of the River Orne.
It was hoped that all objectives could be captured by 0900 hours on
the first day following which, elements of the 4th Armoured
Brigade, could start their attacks. The operation was initially
very successful however heavy fighting for Hill 112 went on all day
and the village of Maltot changed hands several times.
Hill 112 was without a doubt the 'key to Normandy' and featured
large in both sides' strategic-level plans. But ultimately when
COBRA got moving it lost its value. The importance of the battles
for Hill 112 is remembered by the erection of the 43rd Wessex
Division's memorial by the residents of Normandy, to the combatants
and civilians who lost their lives.
