Mara's chambers.

Caves - a cult site in the south-western corner of Gibuli Parish - is a naturally formed cave system in a sandstone exposure on the right bank of the River Abava, about 2 km south-west of the former Kaleši Estate.

It has been suggested that these caves may be identified with a sacred cave mentioned in the Sabile area in a document of 1462. Already from the middle of the 20th century, various tales were published concerning the caves. One of these tells of the ‘holy maidens', who are said to have lived here and to have done their washing on Fridays, as a result of which a great deal of steam came from the chambers.

Robber`s cave

An extensive description of the caves was published in 1907 by the traveller Oskars Emils Šmits, who had heard tales that robbers had once taken shelter here. In search of riches hidden by the robbers, the owner of Kaleši Estate had ordered digging work there in 1903, but apparently nothing was ever found.

The name 'Mara`s chambers'

Šmits also gives a logical explanation for the caves' name. He considers that Catholic clergymen had once hung an image of the Virgin Mary on the wall of the ancient cult cave. Thus, the ancient name of the cave had gone out of use, being replaced by the present name - a Latvianised version of the name ‘Mary'.
