Kopiec

Na temat Kopca w Krakuszowicach krazy wiele legend. Wg najpopularniejszej jest to mogila starszego syna króla Kraka. Kiedy Pod Wawelem w Krakowie zagniezdzil sie smok dwaj synowie króla Kraka - Krak II Starszy i Krak II Mlodszy wyruszyli na walke z nim.

Legenda o znajdujacych sie we wnetrzu kopca skarbach sklonila miejscowego wlasciela ziemskiego, na którego wlosciach znajdowal sie kopiec, do rozkopania go w poszukiwaniu kosztownosci w 1905r.

The mound

There are many legends about a mound in Krakuszowice. The most popular says it is a tomb of an older son of King Krak. At the times when a dragon lived under Wawel Castle in Cracow, there lived two sons of King Krak: Krak 2nd Older and Krak 2nd Younger. The dragon was a nuisance to people, so one day the two brave brothers decided to fight the dragon (to get the crown of course!). They went together and managed to defeat the beast. However, the younger brother was craving so much for becoming a king that he killed his older bother and when back from the quest he told that the horrible dragon killed his older brother. People buried Krak Older duly and built a mound in his memory. After some time the treachery was discovered and Krak the Younger was expelled infamously...

Many centuries after, in 1905, the legend about a treasure hidden inside the mound intrigued a local landlord, on whose land the mound was placed. He started to dig into the mound looking for valuables. They were half way through but found nothing inside. No one ever tried to dig there again but you can still see a big trench across the mound today.

Nowadays, the mound is about 10 meters high, but it was was bigger initially. There have never been any serious archeological excavations there and the purpose of the mound was never precisely explained (same for the other South Poland big mounds). Beside a burial mound theory or that it was some other object of worship, there is also an astronomical hypothesis that the mound may have been a part of an ancient calendar. Krak’s 2nd Mound was probably built by Slavic tribe Vistulans.
