Geocache Description:

Another in the Sidetracked series - 35mm Micro

Having done a few other "Sidetracked" caches, I realised that my local station did not appear on the list!

So, here it is.

The station itself is on the Guildford via Cobham branch line which was completed in 1885.

When the line was built, nearby West Horsley was larger than East Horsley and the original Horsley Station was to be built in West Horsley.

However, the 1st Earl of Lovelace who lived at Horsley Towers, approx 1 mile south of the station used his influence to have the station built closer to his residence. Indeed, after completion, he built a tunnel from Horsley Towers to the station so he didn't have to get wet in inclement weather.

The tunnel has long since been lost although the entrance still exists in the grounds of Horsley Towers and rumour has it that excavations for new house occasionally find a part of the tunnel not yet collapsed!!

The cache itself is located away from railway owned land but do carry on past the cache site and look at this classic Victorian Station.

Be aware that Horsley is a very busy commuter station so best avoided Monday to Friday during the rush hour (or rush 3 hours, as it has now become!)
