Leutascher
Geisterklamm
Klammen und Schluchten entstehen sehr häufig an geologischen
Grenzlinien.
unterschiedlichen Kalkgesteinen gebildet. Der Wechsel ist bereits
ganz deutlich an den Geländeformen zu erkennen. Während im gesamten
Leutaschtal sogenannte Jurakalke vorherrschen, treten hier
wahrzunehmen. Also müssen wir uns technischer Hilfsmittel bedienen,
Beispiel: 65²
--> 6 * (6 + 1) = 6 * 7 = 42
--> 25 anhängen
--> 4225
Beispiel: 6,5²
--> Komma weglassen: 65²
--> 6 * (6 + 1) = 6 * 7 = 42
--> 25 anhängen und Komma setzen
--> 42,25
Baches in Verbindung stehen.
Hänge beide Fotos an
dein Log an!
an dein Log an!
Logs ohne Logfreigabe bzw. Fotos werden
kommentarlos und ohne Ausnahme wieder gelöscht!
Leutasch Spirit
Gorge
Gorges and canyons very often occur at geological boundaries.
Here in the Leutasch Gorge this boundary is formed by two different
limestones. The change between them can clearly be recognized in
the terrain forms. Throughout Leutasch Valley the so called
Jurassic limestone dominates, but here directly at the entrance of
the gorge rock packages of so called Wetterstein appear to the
surface. Since the Jurassic limestone is rich in fine clay material
and therefore water impermeable, flat and fertile valley bottoms
originated.
Gorge or Canyon?
Before we get into the Spirit Gorge, we try to clarify whether
it is the Spirits Gorge or the Spirits
Canyon. Vernacular both terms are used to describe
the same. But do these to terms really mean the same or do
geologists actually talk about two different phenomena?
Gorge and canyon have the same legislative history behind them,
that's for sure. The power of water has eroded itself deeply into
softer areas of rock which led to bizarre and steep walls. While a
canyon is a narrow valley with slightly sloping cliffs, a gorge is
characterized by much steeper, and even in some places overhanging
walls which may even hide the brook from time to time.
So what we have here is actually the Spirit
Gorge, as we expect nearly vertical walls,
whirlpools, pools and hidden loops, through which the the breath of
the Spirit of the Gorge is whistling.
How deep is the
Gorge?
The depth is like a window into the time of the earth, a kind of
geological library in which we can read a little of the origin of
this landscape.
Persons do not have any sense organs to perceive
three-dimensional space. As a two-dimensional being who naturally
can not fly, it is virtually impossible for us to observe, depth or
height directly. So we have to use technical means to literally
"get to the bottom" of the Leutasch Spirit Gorge.
One of your tasks is to measure the relative depth of the gorge
at a certain point. Relatively, because we consider only the
distance between us and the water surface, which depends on the
water level. In spring or after a storm when more water flows, the
gorge seems to be "lower" than in the summer with dryness and lower
water levels.
To determine the relative depth of
the gorge, you may perform the following experiment:
- Search for an approximately fist-sized stone. It should at
least be big enough to fall straight down to the bottom and thereby
will not be blown away by the wind!
- Get to a point where you have a clear view to the ground. Make
sure that no one is beneath you! Do not perform this experiment, if
your view is blocked! We accept no liability for any
accidents!
- Drop the stone down and count (twenty-one, twenty-two, ...) or
stop the seconds until it hits the water surface. The result should
have a precision of half a second!
- Put your measuring result in the following formula: s = g/2 *
t²
"s" means the way that the stone falls down to the bottom in "t"
seconds, which is the approximate height of the bridge! "g" is the
acceleration of gravity, a constant that applies to every body. To
simplify the computation, the acceleration of gravity "g" may be
accepted with 10 m/s² . The air resistance is negligible.
No calculator on tap to calculate
the square number? With the following trick you'll make the
computation even mental (exactly):
|
The square of any two-digit whole number that ends with a 5
(i.e. 15, 25, ..., 95) can be calculated by multiplying its first
digit is by its successor, and appending 25 (= 5²) to the
result.
Example: 65²
--> 6 * (6 + 1) = 6 * 7 = 42
--> append 25
--> 4225
This also works for numbers with a comma. Proceed as above, by
omitting the comma first and then set it again just before the
trailing 25!
Example: 6.5²
--> omit the comma: 65²
--> 6 * (6 + 1) = 6 * 7 = 42
--> append 25 and set the comma again
--> 42.25
Try it for yourself ;-) |
In summary, to compute the approximate height of the gorge,
calculate the square of the amout of seconds the stone takes to
reach the ground and multiply the result with 5.
Example for 4.5 seconds falling time:
5 * 4.5² = 5 * 20.25 = about 100 meters
Logging Conditions
Before you are allowed to log this Earthcache you have to
accomplish the following tasks first (you may want to
answer the questions below in english):
Task 1: Devil's Bend
A bend or pool means a section of deeper water in the stream. But
there are plenty of other terms associated with the course of a
stream. With the help of Spirit of the Gorge's vocabulary you
should be able to answer the following questions:
- How is a depression in the streambed after a sill or rock
called in the Spirit of the Gorge's language? Write down the answer
as AAAAA.
- How is a zone of still water called? Write down the answer as
BBB.
- How is a fast rotational movement of the water called? Write
down the answer as CCCC.
Task 2: Hell's Bridge
Place yourself in the middle of the "Höllbrücke" (= Hell's Bridge)
and determine the relative depth of the gorge at
this point. To perform the experiment described above, you need a
suitable stone. On the other side of the bridge you will find a
branch. Follow the trail on the left towards the "Höllkapelle" (=
Hell's Chapel) and you'll make a find for sure!
Task 3: Treasure of the Spirits
Hear, near the "Panoramabrücke" (= Panorama Bridge), at the deepst
point of the gorge, the Spirit of the Gorge is thought to have
hidden his treasure in the nooks and crannies of the steep rock
face. Your final task is to make two photos of you
and your team: the first one on the Panorama Bridge and a second
one at your personal favorite place within the Leutasch Spirit
Gorge. If you're traveling alone or you do not want to upload a
personal picture, then photos of your GPS receiver with a matching
background are also sufficient, to meet the Logging Conditions.
Attach both photos to your log! More photos are welcome ;-)
Back home send us a brief e-mail with the name of your team
together with the date when you've solved the tasks and the answer
of task 2 to the following address:
AAAAA-BBB-CCCC@mus162.com
"AAAAA-BBB-CCCC" is a placeholder. Of course
you have to replace it by the answers to the questions of task 1
first. If your answers were correct you should get an automatic log
approval immediately. Then you are allowed to log
your visit of Leutasch Spirit Gorge online. Please attach the two
obligatory photos of task 3 to your log as well!
Logs without a valid log approval or
photos will be deleted without exception and comment!
