[ENG] This bridge across the Gauja River is a child of the technological age. In the early 20th century the site still had an ordinary river crossign facility with a wooden ferry to carry people across. The first metal bridge was put up in 1902 and 1903 with financing from the Vidzeme Knighthood. The Gauja used to be deeper than it is now - deep enough at that time to allow a smal ship from Riga arrive by river for the opening of the bridge, complete guests and orchestra. The flag-bedecked ship passed underneath bridge, blew its whistle 3 times, turned around and went back home.
In 1919 the Red army destroyed the bridge while retreating, but it was repaired the same year. The bridge served until the end of World War II, but in September 1944 it was blown up by Germans. After the war, a wooden bridge was put up on the old support pylons, but in 1962, while a column of army vehicles was crossing, the left side of the bridge did not hold up, and it collapsed into the water. The cement-based bridge that you see today was built in 1962 and 1962.
