Here lie the remnants of a bygone era.
This was once known as Powerscourt railway siding. In its heyday it was a hive of activity, with local farmers from the surrounding area loading there sugar beet into rail carriages using horse and cart. Maffra’s sugar beet industry thrived, barring droughts, from 1896 until the occurrence of world war two when the essential labour force was taken away and dairying became far more profitable. The railway was eventually closed in the late 1980’s and a number of years later converted into a rail trail of approximately 10 kms that stretches between Stratford and Maffra. What remains at this site are the footings of the old weighbridge and a rather large mound of dirt that was used as the platform.
The cache is a 1 litre Tupperware container that contains lots of valuables. Please be careful when parking on the side of the road. Happy Hunting.
