Church Micro 877 - Tilmanstone St Andrew's
There was a Saxon church here before the Normans replaced it. St Andrew's church with its thick flint walls and tower dates from the mid 11th century, at one time recorded as being dedicated to Knight’s Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. Both the nave and chancel retain Norman windows on the north side.
Within the church there is a list of vicars going back in an unbroken line to 1271. There is also a renowned 3 dimensional brass relief, the Tilmanstone Brass, a memorial to Richard FOGGE dated around 1598. There is also a 13th century font, which was thrown from the church by Cromwell's men during the civil war (1642 -47), but was reinstated later. The local manor house, Dane Court, was owned by the FOGGE family who were staunch Royalist's. A 16th century tapestry is mounted on the north wall of the nave. The yew tree in the churchyard is claimed to be the oldest in England, being around 1700 years old.
The cache is hidden outside the churchyard. BYOP.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
