This Cache is located in one of Manchester’s many gardens; St John’s Gardens. This is the site of the former St John’s Church and Graveyard, built in 1769. On 28th April 1768, Edward Byrom laid the foundation stone for the church in memorial to his farther. Ecclesiastical Commissioners handed over the church to Manchester City Council in 1930 such that it be laid out as an open space for the benefit of the locale. The Church itself was demolished in 1931, though 2 stained glass windows were transferred to St Anne’s Church (St Anne’s Square) where they still remain. The gardens then became a city park.
The park continues to provide a pleasant green space in the centre of Manchester and in 1998 was awarded a Green Flag Award for achieving the national standard for parks and green spaces. Currently present are formal lawns, flower and herbaceous bedding, ornamental planting, a well laid out footpath plan and plenty of seating and picnic areas. At the original entrance to St John’s church stands a central monument to the church and the 22000 people buried in its grounds. On this monument is also a panel dedicated to the memory of William Marsden who presided over the committee which obtained the Saturday Holiday for Manchester in 1843.
The area has several trees and is surrounded by high rise buildings, therefore the GPS signal may be unreliable. The area should be fairly low on muggles, but people do use this place to sit and relax. Also, people may be more likely to notice you looking around in a relaxed environment so please take care.

27/09/09 - Original cache was muggled and there were concerns over the safety of the original location due to reports of hypodermic needles. We’ve replaced the cache with a micro, and put it in what should be a safer location. YOU NO LONGER NEED TO ROOT IN ANY BUSHES. The original coordinates remain valid. The hint has been updated accordingly.
