Geocache Description:

Well of course it IS possible to camp north of this spot (right up to 90° N) but this patch of tundra to the west of Longyearbyen is the northernmost public campsite in the world, where you can pitch and not have to worry about having a polar bear alarm system around your tent and a rifle by your sleeping bag!

The cache is at a beautiful spot by a lagoon where Arctic Terns nest and other birds can be seen and photographed. The views and sunsets are far superior to any from the various hotels and guest houses in the town centre which is about a 45 minute walk away.

The site is less than 5 minutes from the airport so non-campers might be able to attempt a "cache and dash" while waiting for their plane or taxi!! Note, however, that non-campers are only allowed into the service building to view the truly 'palacial' facilities between the hours of 8am and 8pm and, as everywhere in Longyearbyen, MUST REMOVE THEIR OUTDOOR FOOTWEAR. Also, please be considerate and do not disturb the sleep of those camping if you visit the cache at night.

Finders might also like to join the Arctic Naked Bathing Club, whose headquarters are the service building at the campsite. There is no charge to join but your plunge under the water needs to be witnessed - so that you can be certified!!

At least this was true when I stopped there: I believe there has been a change of ownership since then.

The cache itself was a small "clip & lock" box that will take 1 or 2 geocoins or small TB's but is now a small jar held in place with some wire (thanks to Boza. I think that it will be available all year round as the snow doesn´t get too deep in the area (or so I was told). The initial contents were a logbook and pencil, a whistle with a minicompass, some bear footprints and a West Bromwich Mountaineering Club calling card! Plus a geocoin that wanted to travel as far north as possible. It has probably achieved it's aim as, at almost 78¼ degrees N, this is the northernmost geocache in Longyearbyen and other caches in the Svalbard archipelago which maybe nearer the Pole are visited very infrequently. Please don´t clog the small cache box up with any old geo-tat or personal ´calling cards´ so as to leave room for trackable.
My thanks to Michelle and Andreas Umbreit, joint owners of Longyearbyen Camping, for giving me permission to place this geocache and for providing such an excellent facility for budget travellers and those who like to live close to nature. I have made arrangements with local people to perform maintenance if necessary and will post new log books or replacement caches if these are required.

A huge THANK YOU to a 'bunch of Swedes' aka Bernike, ralleman, Ezap and Pleu for offering to help, and then putting a new box and log book in place in the summer of 2019 after the original container had gone missing after 10 years under the building. Your help is very much appreciated. Länga leva Sverige

And in April 2022 I have to say another MEGA thank you to Boza for going out of his way to find a jar container and fix it firmly into place, complete with a pencil and new log sheet. Without help such as this this cache in beautiful Svaalbard would have to be closed down. I am truly grateful, as the cache had been reduced to just a piece of paper under a stone - hardly up to Arctic conditions.
