Geocache Description:

This cache is situated in Highlands Wood just outside the magnificent gardens of Holehird, the home of the Lakeland Horticulture Society (LHS). In the gardens you will find thousands of plants including three national collections of Astilbe, Hydrangea and Polystichum. The mansion was leased to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation in 1961 and in 1969 the LHS was formed and work on the extensive Upper Garden began. Over the previous years there had been a sad deterioration but the founder members of the society set to work clearing the brambles, rescuing specimen trees and shrubs and restoring paths through the undergrowth. If the previous owners returned today they would be glad to see the gardens flourishing and being enjoyed by so many visitors. The views from the gardens are magnificent and include Coniston and the Langdale Fells. Before or after finding the cache walk round the gardens and then walk round Holehird tarn which is down near the road. Car Park: You can park at the bottom and walk round the nearby tarn and then walk up the drive, or drive up and turn right (the left turn goes to the Cheshire Homes which is private).
