All geocachers are welcome to participate in a picnic style
event in Suomenlinna. The event takes place on August, 27 at 17:30.
There will also be guests from Groundspeak, Inc. attending the
event.
Suomenlinna is a major monument of military architecture. In mid
18th century the construction work of the sea fortress on the
islands just off Helsinki, was the most extensive building project
during Swedish rule. It´s shipyard became one of the biggest dry
docks in the world and centres of know-how at that time. At the end
of Swedish rule, the fortress was being compared with the maritime
fortifications of Gibraltar.
The 250-year-old fortress, which has been preserved intact
because of its military use, is today part of the world heritage.
In 1991 it was included in the UNESCO^Ys World Heritage List.
The picnic takes place at given coordinates. Please, bring your
own picnic snacks. Beside the lawn is also a shelter we can use, in
case of rain. We can't reserve the place, so it is possible that
also other people than geocachers will also be using the shelter.
Please notice, that open fires and barbeques are prohibited in the
entire area of Suomenlinna.
Groundspeak co-founders Jeremy Irish, Elias Alvord, and Bryan
Roth together with Heidi Hudlow-Roth & Heidi Anderson will
participate in the event. Some of the Finnish reviewers will also
attend.
There is a ferry connection to Suomenlinna from Kauppatori.
Two-way ticket for adult costs 3.80 euros and for children up to 16
years, 1.90 euros. The ticket is valid for 12 hours. There is a
ticket automat at Kauppatori.

Kaikki geokätköilijät ovat tervetulleita picnic-eventtiin
Suomenlinnaan 27.8.2009 kello 17.30 alkaen. Eventtiin osallistuu
myös vieraita Groundspeak Inc:sta Yhdysvalloista.
Suomenlinna on merkittävä sotilasarkkitehtuurin muistomerkki.
Merilinnoituksen rakentaminen Helsingin edustan saarille 1700-luvun
puolivälissä oli Ruotsin valtion mittavin rakennushanke.
Valmistuessaan sen sotilastelakka oli yksi maailman suurimmista
kuivatelakoista, joka edusti oman aikansa huipputekniikkaa. Ruotsin
vallan ajan lopulla linnoitus sai mainesanan Pohjolan
Gibraltar.
Sotilaskäytön ansiosta eheänä kokonaisuutena säilynyt
250-vuotias linnoitus on osa maailmanperintöä. Se liitettiin
UNESCOn maailmanperintöluetteloon vuonna 1991.
Picnic pidetään annetuissa koordinaateissa nurmella. Ota omat
eväät mukaan. Vieressä on myös eväsruokatila, johon pääsee suojaan
sateen sattuessa. Eväsruokatilaa ei voi varata, joten sitä voivat
käyttää samanaikaisesti muutkin kuin geokätköilijät. Huomioithan
myös, ettei Suomenlinnan alueella saa sytyttää avotulta eikä
käyttää grillejä.

Suomenlinnaan pääsee HKL:n lautalla Kauppatorilta, ja matka
kestää noin 15 minuuttia. Edestakainen matka maksaa 3,80 euroa
aikuiselta ja 1,90 euroa lapselta (alle 16 vuotta). Lippu on
voimassa 12 tuntia ostohetkestä. Kauppatorilta löytyy
lippuautomaatti.
