Geocache Description:

My neighbor
George Kortsolakis grew up on the Greek island of Crete (pronounced “kreet-y) and came to New York in 1955. He spent years working as a tailor to the stars, everyone from Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman and prizefighter Mike Tyson.

When George retired in 1990 he turned to his garden, a small swatch of roughly 7x 20 feet, between his house and the sidewalk. He dreamed of returning to Crete, so one day in 2003, he started to build a 7 foot long replica of Crete right there in his garden! He added moss for grass and pieces of slate down in for Crete’s mountains. Turquoise aquarium rocks represent the sea. There are dozens of houses, churches, cars, boats, tiny people, and farm animals even a replica of George’s childhood home.

“This is one of a kind!” George proudly declares in his thick Greek accent, happy to explain his masterpiece and the history of Crete to anyone who stops and looks, pointing out the clock in the back under the shell-spelled banner Crete Time.

“Up in the mountains, you see here?” George says pointing. “These are the kri-kri, jumping goats that you find only in Crete.”

SADLY George Passed Away on 4/20/2016 after a brief illness.

George was out there every day, before dawn, and well after dusk, always thinking about what he can add next. “The island was too dark,” George explains. “It needs lights.” So, he recruited an electrician to help him make streetlights, tiny white lights covered with clear pen caps.
George built a temple like structure of Plexiglas trimmed with gold painted molding to protect his island from the elements then added rope lights on the ceiling for stars. He rigged systems for stimulated weather patterns. “I put rain inside. Snow inside. I make stars inside. It’s a beautiful thing… looks exactly like Crete,” he says. So check out his garden. Also if you walk your dog don't forget to leash, gutter & clean up after it & please DON'T pick the flowers. If you happen to see a muggle sitting across the street it's probably ME, (Jeff) come across & say "HI".
The cache is a small container room for the log & maybe a couple of coins, BYOP. Please place it back securely.
