Geocache Description:

The three ”troll valleys” of Kilsbergen are made up of rifts that run perpendicular to Kilsbergen’s eastern approach. The middle of these valleys is quite dramatic.

In the Trollvalley ran a powerful ice river when the inland ice melted for 10 000 years ago.
The water cut the sides of the valley and put spin on the large rocks, which bore itself straight down into the mountain and formed so called pothole. The steep sides of the valley are lined by old forest with many rare mosses, lichens and mushrooms.

The Trollvalley and Vargkitteln are part of the same riftvalley, eastern Trolldalen. The crevice was formed when the Kilsbergen developed several million years ago. But it was first during the last ice age, approximately 10 00 years ago, the eastern Trolldalen became its dramatic and unique forms. When the glacier began to melt, a large lake was formed in the Kilsbergen. The water continued to the sea through the valley, where the rushing water smoothed rocks and bricks on their way.
Some of the stones that the mighty ice river washed with itself through the Trolldalen ended at a shingle beach, see earthcache GC1VKAP. The fine-grained material, sand and clay, was passed into the sea and sedimented on the seabed which would later become the plains of Närke.

The riftvalley in the Trolldalen is very narrow and it is known for the exciting ice formations formed in the ravine in the vinter. At both sides of the valley you see old spruce which is almost unaffected by forestry. In the forest it is moist, shade and there are plenty of dead trees – a perfect environment for many rare mosses, lichens and mushrooms.

Due to the difficulty of the terrain you have to follow the marked path through the valley. The path is sometimes “invisible”, especially after N 59 22.671 E 014 57.888 (but then marked again) and depending on the weather rubber boots recommends.

To log this earthcache as found you have to:

  1. Measure the length of the valley with your GPS (between the two information signs) and mail us the answer.
  2. Please upload a photo with you and your GPS in the valley, near the coordinates (A photo is no longer required for the log, but it would be nice).

Logs without correct answer-mails will be deleted. You don´t have to wait for permission. We´ll contact you, if there is a problem.
Don´t post the answers in your log.

Good luck!
