A Sussex high point affording great views in most directions (given clear weather of course).
Wolstonbury Hill is within the South Downs National Park and is a designated ANOB - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Two long distance footpaths pass close by, the Sussex Border Path and South Downs Way. These are the motorway equivalent for the walker!
In olden times, King Alfred fought on Wolstonbury Hill and there's evidence of large Iron Age earthworks near the top which contain several enclosures. It's thought open pit flint quarrying took place on the hill in the first half of the 1800s, leaving a scar on the landscape. However, all's peaceful now.
You'll see many craters on the hill, these are the result of mortar bomb practice during WWll. Parts of several tail-fins and rusty bomb casings have been unearthed in the past. We guess the needs of war were a higher priority than countryside protection in those days!
The hill provides some great views across the Sussex Weald to the north. To the east are the Jack and Jill windmills, with Ditchling Beacon beyond. The outskirts of the city of Brighton is to the south, with four lanes of roaring traffic rushing relentlessly along the A23 highway below. Looking west and Newtimber Hill, West Hill and Devils Dyke can be seen while further on the tree-lined edge of Chanctonbury Ring can be made out.
A herd of an ancient breed of cow is grazed by the National Trust on the hill. They're distinguished by their long spiky horns, but they're pretty harmless; remember they're more scared of you than you are of them!
Nearest parking is at Pyecombe. The terrain rating reflects the sometimes steep nature of the climb (depending on which route along public footpaths you take up to the cache).
The cache is located 179 meters above sea level not far from the highest point. After you find it a nearby footpath takes you up to Trig Point S3887 from where you can admire the views.
The cache is positioned such that you can just remove the lid to get to the log leaving the container in place. You may need to rotate it a bit to access - you'll see what we mean when you find it. Please rotate it back so it's not too obvious to passing muggles. And please ensure the log bag seal and container lid is firmly clipped in place to restrict moisture ingress!
