Dartmoor’s high rainfall makes it a perfect place to harvest water for the surrounding population. In the past this was achieved by tapping local rivers, springs and wells, but as populations grew, a more substantial source was required, and this led to the construction of the leats.
Problems with consistent supply, pollution and expensive maintenance meant that, ultimately, a better supply had to be found. This led to the construction of reservoirs by damming the various rivers in the region. The largest of these reservoirs is at Burrator, and the oldest at Tottiford, completed in 1861.
The cache is hidden on the shore of Tottiford Reservoir, part of a 3-reservoir complex near Bovey Tracey.
