This small cache is located in the Belle Colline (French=Beautiful Hill) area of Pomme de Terre Lake in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks.
Pomme de Terre Lake is located in the rugged, tree covered hills of the west central Missouri Ozarks on the Pomme de Terre River.
According to legend, the French explorer La Salle gave the Pomme de Terre River its name when he crossed the Ozarks in 1682. It is unlikely, however, that La Salle explored this far from the Mississippi River. The phrase "pomme de terre" is French for "apple of the earth’ or potato. The river probably was named by early French trappers and fur traders for plants resembling potatoes that grew on its banks. This plant was probably an Apios americana or potato bean, and was used as food by the Indians.
Substantial settlement began in Polk and Hickory Counties in the 1830’s. The Pomme de Terre River was the dividing line between the Indians and settlers until 1835. Agriculture, lead and zinc mining, and lumbering played important parts in the economy during the early years of settlement.
I have received permission of the property owners to place this cache. In fact, they are so excited over it being there that I think I’ve acquired some new geocaching buddies since they are now excited about the “hunt”!
I also have permission of the Pomme de Terre USACE to place caches around the lake as long as they are in compliance with their guidelines.
Original contents of this small screw top container: Log book (bring your own pen or pencil), mini disc thrower, floatable key chain, green rubber frog, super ball, and gold Mardi Gras beads.
Deep Woods Off is a great plus during warmer months...heck, what am I saying...we have ticks when it's sub-freezing!
