Geocache Description:

What: clinic on basic climbing gear and climbing safety
When: July 19 8:30am – 1:00pm
Where: in the rocks and cliffs along Turnagain Arm between McHugh Creek and Beluga Point
Why: because you asked for it and to have fun of course
How: both discussion and hands-on demonstrations and participation

Over the ages of geocaching in Alaska many cachers have expressed interest in the high mountain adventure caches scattered across this great State and expressed dismay in either not having the proper gear or knowledge of how to use said gear, therefore not being able to go out and get to those far away places. So we decided it is time to help change that and are putting on a clinic to demonstrate some basic climbing ABCs.

What you will need to bring: basic personal gear, clothes appropriate for being outdoors for several hours (hat, rain jacket, good shoes, gloves, etc.), water and snacks and a willingness to learn and have fun. If you have your own person gear please bring it with you (helmet, harness, belay device, biners, etc.). Of course cameras are a nice thing to have as well so you can take pictures to keep what you learn fresh. Don’t forget to bring your inner child and your spirit of adventure.

There will be both technical and hands-on demonstrations. There is parking at McHugh Creek which is where we are going to start from and also across the highway and a bit farther down the road to the South if you feel like walking a ways. There is a State Recreation Use parking fee for the parking at McHugh Creek or you can get an annual pass good at almost all of the State Day Use parking areas from REI, Park Service, or from most Park Rangers.

In case you were wondering about the name of the event, one of the many meanings of the word scotch is “make harmless for a time” also “to block or prop or wedge”. The hope of the clinic is to provide people with information about proper climbing safety and empower them to get out into the wild country with more knowledge than they had before.

See you all on the rocks.
