IGREJA MATRIZ DE NOSSA SENHORA DA ESTRELA
No lugar desta igreja existiu, nos primeiros tempos do povoamento, uma pequena capela dedicada a Nossa Senhora do Loreto. Após a elevação da Ribeira Grande a vila, em 1507, foi contratado o mestre-de-obras biscainho Juan de la Peña para construir um novo templo que viria a ser sagrado em 1517. As principais obras de reconstrução a que depois foi sujeito foram empreendidas na primeira metade do século XVIII (entre 1728 e 1736), sendo dessa época a configuração actual do edifício.
A fachada principal, que reflecte a divisão em três naves, corresponde ao tipo mais frequente nas igrejas de São Miguel. A torre salienta-se pela sua dimensão, por ser construída em cantaria à vista e por apresentar uma fiada de rombos em relevo sob cada uma das três cornijas superiores. Do interior, entre outros aspectos, destaca-se o revestimento em talha da Capela do Santíssimos e os dois lavabos em pedra aparelhada que se encontram frente no vestíbulo da sacristia.
THE CHURCH OF NOSSA SENHORA DA ESTRELA At the time of the first settlements, a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto once existed where this church stands today. After the promotion of Ribeira Grande to town in 1507, the master-stonemason from Biscay, Juan de la Peña was hired to build a new church that was sanctified in 1517. Much later, during the first half of the 18th century (between 1728 and 1736), it underwent major reconstruction, with the current configuration of the building dating from that era. The tripartite façade, reflecting its division into three naves, corresponds to the type most frequently found in São Miguel churches. The tower is notable not only because of its size, but also because of its bare stonework, with a band of lozenges in relief under each of the three upper cornices. Among other aspects of interest in its interior, are the carvings lining the Santissimo Chapel and two roughly-carved stone lavabos, facing each other in the sacristy vestibule. “Património Ribeira Grande”
