1941. gada vasarā nacistiskās Vācijas armija ienāca tajā laikā Padomju Savienības okupētās Latvijas teritorijā.
Pēc vācu karaspēka ierašanās Madonā sākās vietējo ebreju aresti. Arestētos izvietoja pilsētas nomalē kopā ar apcietinātajiem no Lubānas. Augustā visi tika konvojēti uz Smeceres mežu, kur “Arāja komanda” kopā ar vietējo pašaizsardzībnieku palīdzību viņus nošāva (kopā ap 250 cilvēku).
1960.g. pēc kara izdzīvojušie ebreji te uzstādīja pieminekli, taču tas līdz mūsdienām nav saglabājies.
1993.g. tika izveidots jauns piemineklis (tēlnieks Gvido Buls), kuram blakus 2006.g. uzstādīts arī neliels akmens ar uzrakstu latviešu valodā.
Šāda dizaina piemineklis man likās diezgan neparasts - nekur citur Latvijā tādu neesmu redzējis. Uz šo piemiņas vietu nav nevienas ceļa norādes, neesmu to redzējis arī kartēs vai ceļvežos, tāpēc gribēju to parādīt arī citiem.

In the summer of 1941 the Nazi Germany military forces entered the territory of Latvia (at the time already occupied by Soviet Russia.
After the German army had arrived in Madona in July, the arrests of local jews began. The arrested were taken to the outskirts of the town and temporarily imprisoned there together with jews from Lubāna. In August they were all transported to Smecere forest, where they were all executed (in total about 250 persons).
In 1960 jews who had survived the war built a monument here but that one did not last.
In 1993 a new granite monument was erected, and later, in 2006 also a stone with inscription in Latvian.
It is an unusal design, I have not seen any other monument in Latvia like this one. It is not marked on maps that I've seen and no road signs, no printed guides will bring you here. For this reason I wanted to show it to other people as well.
