This is a old fire lookout site located at the 5898 ft elevation on the Manastash Ridge SW of Ellensburg. This is one more qualifying lookout site for the WA Fire Lookout Challenge.
A easy drive by cache to get to. The roads are suited for almost any SUV type of vehicle if approaching from the South side via US410 /USFS Rd 1702 Rock Creek Rd.
At the beginning of USFS RD 530 it becomes a little steep and one lane most of the way to the old Lookout site.There are still the concrete footings of the steel tower present at the site
The first Lookout was a 44 ft light steel tower and a log cabin built in 1931. In 1955 a L-4 38 ft tower built 1 mile SE of summit and a patrol LO 2 miles 'West Destroyed in 1972
The cache was placed on Fathers Day 2009 /First day of Summer. When the cache was placed, it started to snow almost white out with strong winds blowing the snow sideways and a temperature a balmy 35 Deg F. Oh Yeah Welcome Summer!! Today I had no idea what the view are.
The day I placed this cache I was going to another one 2 miles further up the road. I gave up and found this spot to turn around and noticed the footings. I was not really prepared to leave a cache so it is empty (3" black PVC container about 10" in length) except for a log book and small pencil. I plan to be back in a week and stock it better and do more cache hunting near by.
