Church Micro 767 - St. Peter's, Frocester Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Lady-Magpie: Once again this cache has been removed so due to problems with the local parish council and the cricket club, I have decided to archive the cache and perhaps find a new beautiful spot in the area. Pity as it was well worth a visit.

Geocache Description:

An unusual church location with only the spire and church porch still remaining. The surface is flat but grassed but could be accessed by both pushchairs and disabled.

The cache is a small round plastic sealable container inside a black bag, which can hold small items including TB's coins etc.

Original Contents:

1. Logbook & pencil
2. Houston Keyring
3. 50L Italian coin
4. Very small Horace the Hedgehog
5. Small Virgin Plane Toy
(Pull back and watch it go)
6. Steph's 3 year Anniversary TB

All that remains of St. Peter's Church, Frocester is the tower and the remains of the south porch. Francis Niblett restored the church and built the broach spire in 1849. Previous to that date this church had become ruinous and had been abandoned in the 17th Century. After a nearly a century of re-use the nave of the church was demolished in 1952 leaving just the tower and porch standing.
Stone was allowed to be taken from the church site to build the chapel at Wycliffe College in nearby Stonehouse. St. Peter's still has an elaborately carved wooden lych gate and some interesting stone chest tombs. Although the tower stands in open countryside a nearby farmhouse built in 'Berkeley Red' stock bricks is seen here through the bridge under the Bristol/Gloucester main railway line. It is typical of rural domestic architecture in the Severn Vale.

*******Please Note:********

Geocaching regulations do not permit you to place caches in churchyards so please do not search on the wrong side of the wall. I also noted that the footpath into the adjoining sports field has been blocked by a padlock on the gate (As this is a public footpath on the OS Map, I have spoken and reported this to the local Parish Council who are looking into this) If you find the gate locked there is another gate through and to the rear of the churchyard.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication

There is now a Church Micro statistics page which can beviewed via the bookmark list
