Geocache Description:

The Ring of Fire...Cheesden Loop - Grain Brook Waterfall

A classic Hillgorilla cache, from the original Cheesden series it has become part of the Big Walk and now the Ring of Fire.

Grain Brook Waterfall is a geocache located near to a waterfall on the Grain Brook, which rises on the Rossendale fells and then flows into Cheesden Brook. Running alongside the brook is the track known as the Coal Road, this was the access to the collery which was situated on the slopes of Scout Moor.

DO NOT APPROACH THE CACHE SITE FROM THE TOP OF THE WATERFALL. The cache site is located near the base of the outcrops which form the waterfall, to get to it please follow the directions below. Please be careful going down to the cache site as it is steep, and uneven underfoot. Also in may be slippy in places. There are also small outcrops to watch out for. Please note that you go at your own risk.

(1) Walk along the Coal Road - you will come to a Standing Stone (see picture). From the Coal Road you will be able to look down to the waterfall.

(2) At the Standing Stone - follow the small gully which runs down the hillside in a diagonal direction. Take it slowly, and watch your footing.

(3) Once down near the base of the outcrops - look for the cache site (see pointer picture).

(4) Once you have found the cache site return to the Coal Road the same way.

How will you feel when you get here? Will you have succumbed to the Ring of Fire? Do your heels and toes have that burning feeling?

The Ring of Fire is a series of geocaches that will take you into the hills of South East Lancashire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, it is up to you how you get round the Ring of Fire. If you are brave, and do not mind a bit of thigh burn, heel burn and sweaty feet, maybe you could do them all in one go, or you could take a bite of the Ring, or just do them one at a time.

The Ring of Fire, will take you to remote places, where it is rough underfoot, you may not meet another person for hours, you will have to go prepared for the worst that the hills can throw at you.
