The above coords will take
you to ‘St Mary Major’, which is the sole survivor of 7 churches in
a once important town. (Called Lindinis in Roman
times.) Hard to imagine
now, but it was the County Town during the 11th and
12th century. The now unused church of St Andrew lies
close by in Northover across the river.
The sturdy 50ft octagonal tower sprung from the
13th century and is one of a number in Somerset.
If one enters, (Not required) fragments of the original
13th century décor can be seen in the corner behind
pulpit Also note the impressive octagonal Ham stone font which was
retrieved in two pieces from churchyard in early 1990’s having been
discarded during a Victorian restoration. On the west wall is a
brass tablet commemorating the famous Roger Bacon, believed by some
to be the father of modern science. He was born in Ilchester around
1214.

just ask that you could let
