The Parish Church of Saint Edmund King and Martyr, East
Mersea
The existing church is believed to date back to around the 12th
century, but is at least six centuries old. There are gargoyles
resembling calves and sheep adorning the outside of the building
which is a reflection of the agricultural character of the
area.
The church is perhaps best known for its famous rector, the Rev
Sabine Baring Gould, who authored several well-known hymns,
including 'Onward Christian Soldiers'. He was Rector from
1870-1881.
The church consists of a nave, south aisle, chancel and has a small
chapel. It's square tower was, at one time, used as a beacon and
had five bells. It now only has two bells. Roman tile is to be seen
in the masonry of the church and there are also reports that there
may be a villa under or near to the church building.
The moated area of the church and all is once believed to have been
the site of a Danish encampment.
Please make sure the cache is returned securely to the same place.
Thanks.
