Geocache Description:

A forgotten piece of local heritage

The Gungahleen Schoolhouse is important as one of three early surviving examples of a public school in the Australian Capital Territory from the period before the creation of the Territory.

Importantly, Gungahleen and one other example are early surviving schools, now in the ACT, associated with the major changes brought about by and related to the Public Instruction Act of 1880. This provided a very important framework for the New South Wales public school system and heralded a greater emphasis on education and the provision of more resources for schools by the Government.

It was the oldest timber school surviving from the nineteenth century in the Territory and is associated with its pastoral settlement however due to a fire the original building has been demolished and a new one re-built.

The difficulty is a little higher on this one as you can be spotted from nearby muggle homes. Please replace the camo to look as natural as possible when you are returning the cache.

Also please do not enter the nearby fenced off area for obvious reasons.
