A Traditional Cache Near Fethiye (Turkey)

Attention: The GPS-reception is very poor at the monastery. Therefore the coordinates are potentially not very precise. To avoid complications we strongly recommend to use the spoiler-pics!
English Description:
Pretty much by accident we heard of "Afkule". According to the legend an 11th century monk named Ayios Elefterios discovered this beautiful and far-off spot. He decided, that it would be a very well place for worshiping god. So he began constructing a little monastery on a 10 squaremeters area right beside the steep slope and partly carved into the rocks. It is said, that building of the monastery was his way of doing penance to god in utter solitude and it costs him his whole lifetime. Only god knows, how he managed to accomplish these physical and mental strains and struggles all by himself.
The locals call this place "Afkule", which means "Tower of grace/mercy" or "Tower of hope". From "Afkule" you have a spectacular view over the mediterranean sea and, if the weather is fine, even to the island of Rhodes. Nowadays the monastery is in ruinous condition, but you can access these ruins and you can also proceed into the carved rooms in the rock. The lower ones must have been used as a stable for goats. You can immediately smell it, when entering here. Amongst the other remaining masonry you'll find 2 chapels and a cistern, which is superior to the monastery.
How to access the cachelocation:
At first you have to drive to the so called "ghosttown" named Kayaköy near Fethiye. At N 36° 34.495 E 029° 03.260 a small road diverts from the main road. There is also a sign-board directing to "Afkule". Follow this small road. At N 36° 34.488 E 029° 03.043 you should park you car, because the road is getting worse. If you dare, or have an SUV, you can drive further until the road ends. Then you have to proceed by feet. In the beginning it is a nice walk in the shadows of a pine forest, but later on the path steepens notable and the vegetation changes from pines to bushes. When you have reached the top, you will face the cistern, but that is not your goal. You have to proceed your hike down the trail to the given cache-coordinates.
Overall you have to walk 1.5 kilometers from the suggested parking place (oneway). After finding the cache don't forget to enjoy the breathtaking view.
The cache contains only a logstrip, but no pen! So please bring your own pen to sign the log.

Mehr oder weniger durch Zufall haben wir von "Afkule" erfahren. Die Legende besagt, dass ein Mönch namens Ayios Elefterios aus dem 11. Jahrhundert diesen wunderschönen und einsamen Ort entdeckte. Er beschloß, dass dies ein hervorragender Platz zur Anbetung Gottes sei. Deshalb begann er auf nur 10 Quadratmeter Grundfläche dieses kleine Kloster direkt am Steilhang und teilweise in den Fels gemeißelt zu bauen. Es wird gesagt, dass er mit der Errichtung des Klosters in völliger Einsamkeit Buße tun wollte. Und dieses Bauvorhaben dauerte sein ganzes Leben lang. Nur Gott wird wohl wissen, wie er es geschafft hat, die damit verbundenen körperlichen und geistigen Anstrengungen ganz allein zu bewältigen. Die einheimische Bevölkerung nennt diesen Ort "Afkule", was soviel bedeutet wie "Turm der Hoffnung" oder "Turm der Gnade". Von hier aus hat man einen phantastischen Blick über das Mittelmeer und, bei gutem Wetter, bis nach Rhodos. Heutzutage ist das Kloster natürlich zu einer Ruine verfallen, aber man kann die Anlage, inclusive der in den Fels gemeißelten Räume betreten. Die unteren Räume im Fels wurden wohl als Ziegenstall genutzt. Man kann dies beim Betreten sofort riechen. Neben den anderen verbliebenen Gemäuern, sind 2 Kapellen und eine Zisterne, welche oberhalb liegt, zu finden.
Der Zugang zur Cachelocation:
Zunächst musst Du in die sogenannte "Geisterstadt" Kayaköy in der Nähe von Fethiye fahren. Dort zweigt bei N 36° 34.495 E 029° 03.260 eine kleine Straße von der Hauptstraße ab. Dort ist auch ein Hinweisschild auf "Afkule" angebracht. Folge dieser kleinen Straße. Bei N 36° 34.488 E 029° 03.043 kannst Du Dein Auto parken, weil die Straße ab hier sehr schlecht wird. Wenn Du Dich traust, oder einen Geländewagen hast, dann kannst Du die Straße auch bis zum Ende weiterfahren. Spätestens ab hier musst Du zu Fuß weitergehen. Zu Beginn ist es ein schöner Spaziergang in den Schatten eines Pinienwaldes. Aber später wandelt sich die Vegetation von Pinienbäumen zu kleinen Sträuchern und der Weg wird merklich steiler. Wenn Du die Anhöhe erreicht hast, wirst Du auf die Zisterne treffen. Dies ist aber nicht das Ziel. Du musst dem Weg weiter nach unten zu den vorgegebenen Cache-Koordinaten folgen, um zum Kloster zu gelangen.
Achtung: Der GPS-Empfang am Kloster ist sehr schlecht und die Koordinaten daher möglicherweise nicht sehr präzise. Um die Sache nicht zu kompliziert zu machen, empfehlen wir dringend die Spoiler-Bilder zu benutzen!
Insgesamt sind von den empfohlenen Parkkoordinaten bis zum Kloster ca. 1,5 Kilometer zurückzulegen. Nach dem Finden des Caches vergiß nicht die atemberaubende Aussicht zu genießen.
Im Cache ist nur ein Logstreifen, aber kein Stift! Bitte bringe daher einen eigenen Stift zum Loggen mit.

Afkule ismini kazara duyduk. Efsanelere göre bu güzel ve uzak yeri Ayios Elefterios adinda bir keşiş 11 yyda keşfetmiş. Buranin ibadet etmek icin ideal bir yer olduguna karar vermiş ve dik yamaca ve kayanın icine dogru 10 m2lik bir manastir inşa etmeye başlamış. Derler ki bu manastırı inşa etmek; bir münzevi olarak keşişin tanrıya kefaretiymiş ve tüm hayatını manastırı inşa ederek gecirmiş. Sadece tanrı bu fiziksel ve mental zorlamayla nasıl başettiginin sırrını bilirmiş.
Yerel adi Afkule: afedilmenin kulesi. Afkuleden hava uygunsa rodosu kadar giden muhteşem bir deniz manzarası seyredebilirsiniz. Bu günlerde manastır virane olsada kayanın icine dogru oyulmuş odalara girebilirsiniz. Manastırın kalıntılarıın yanında 2 şapel ve bir sarnıç bulunmakta.
Cache nasıl ulaşacaksınız:
İlk olarak "hayalet kasaba"da denilen Kayaköye araba ile gitmelisiniz. Kayaköyden Gemile'ye giderken K 36° 34.495 D 029° 03.260 koordinatında tabela ilede gösterilen Afkuleye giden yola sapın. K 36° 34.488 D 029° 03.043 koordinatina kadar araba ile gidebilirsiniz, yolun geri kalanı ise arazi aracları icin uygun olabilir. Yol bittikten sonra sağa dogru bir patika başlıyor, burdan sonrasını yaya olarak devam etmek zorundasınız. Patikanın başlangıcı cam agaçlarının gölgesinde güzel bir yürüyüş parkuru iken ilerliyen metrelerde camlar yerini calilara birakiyor. Tepeye vardıgınızda sarnıçı göreceksiniz lakin amacınız burası degil. Yürüşünüze verilen koordinatlar dogrultusunda aşagıya dogru devam etmelisiniz.
Dikkat: Manastir civarında GPS sinyali cok zayıf. Bu nedenle koordinatlar kesin koordinatlar degildir. Bundan kacınmak icin Cache'in yerini gösteren fotograflardan yayarlanibilirsiniz.
Arabanizi bıraktıgınız yerden afkuleye toplamda 1,5 km yürüyorusunuz. Cache'i bulduktan sonra nefeskesici manzaranın keyfine varmayı unutmayın. Cache'te sadece seyirdefteri ve kalem bulunmakta. Kalemin yazmama ihtimaline karşı bir kalemle gitmeniz tavsiye olunur.

A small note on cache-maintenance: We visit this part of Turkey twice a year, so we are able to maintain the cache. Additionally the Geocachers "Global_Boy", "Miguelhamburg" and "chatcar", who also spend their holidays multiple times a year at Yaniklar/Fethiye, will help us to take care of the cache.
