Geocache Description:

Church Micro 668 - Polwarth Parish Church

Polwarth - a historic Scottish Kirk.

A cache by Haz_n_Jo, maintained by Interloper.

Polwarth Parish Church has a long and distinguished history, stretching back hundreds of years. Although an inscribed stone set into the south wall claims that there has been a church on this site from before 900AD, this church was built in 1703 and replaced the mediaeval church of "Poulworth" which was dedicated to David de Bernham, Bishop of St Andrews in 1242.

The crypt (visible from the rear of the church) is the family vault of the Hume family, and was the famous hiding place of Patrick Hume when he was a fugitive in 1683. He hid there for four weeks, and was fed with food smuggled from Marchmont House, the family seat. He was allegedly implicated in the plot to assassinate Charles II.

The church was renovated internally in 1928.

Cache is standard micro, and when set, contained a pathtag.

Please take care to replace the cache exactly where you found it, to avoid it being muggled.

If anybody would like to expand on this series please do so. Could you please let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
