Located north of the World Financial Center in Battery Park City
lies Teardrop Park. Surrounded by four 210 to 235-foot-tall
apartment buildings, this 2-acre park is bound by Warren and Murray
Streets, River Terrace and North End Avenue.
Designed by innovative landscape architect Michael Van
Valkenberg, Teardrop Park opened on September 30, 2004 and is just
one within a network of Battery Park City parks. The shadier
southern half of the park is an active play area featuring a long
slide, two sand pits, "theatre steps" and a water playground. The
northern half is unprogrammed play space featuring a broad lawn,
which is graded to catch the most light from the south, park
benches, a small wetland play path, and a perched gathering area
made from New York State rocks. Dividing these two areas is the
large magnificent "Ice Wall," artwork by Ann Hamilton and Michael
Mercil, constructed from New York State sedimentary rocks. The
rocks are stacked to resemble a natural stratum and include a water
source to allow icicles to form in the winter. A short tunnel
connects the two areas, and is an homage to Frederick Law Olmsted
and the tunnels he created within Central Park. Pathways
criss-cross the site, providing elevated views within the park and
beyond as well as urban connections across the park.
Reliable satellite reception in this area is very difficult due
to the large apartment buildings and rock structures. You are sure
to experience signal bounce. I have taken various readings at
different times of the day with hopes of arriving at reasonable
coordinates. In any event, I have provided detailed progressive
clues which I'm sure most will find necessary.
This cache should take you to the top of the Hilltop Reading
Circle where you will hopefully discover a decon container.
Please use extreme stealth as this is a popular area for the
apartment residents and GZ may be difficult to approach on 'nice'
days. Plus you never know who might be watching you from their
apartment.
Be sure to take the time to walk around the different areas of
the park as it's very unique in its design. If you have children,
they are sure to fall in love with this park especially the slide
which is one of the longest I've seen in Manhattan. Apologies to
all dog owners but this is a dog free park so your canine will have
to sit this one out.
As always, please secure cache lid properly to ensure watertight
seal and rehide to conceal from muggles.
Good luck and enjoy your visit!
