Geocache Description:

Part of the Side Tracked series which are accessible by public transport but why not leave your car here walk down the Lledr Valley to Betws y Coed and get the train back - a grand day out.(Allow 3 hours to get to Betws)

The railway to Dolwyddelan was opened in 1879 and up to the terminus at Blaenau Ffestiniog two years later. The station was originally constructed as an island platform with buildings comprising Booking Hall, Waiting room, Stores etc. Access was by means of steps from the overbridge down to the platform. There was also a goods shed and sidings adjacent to the station. The shed was demolished in the 50's and the station buildings in the 60's. Today the passing loop on the up side has been removed, the station is a basic shelter and the goods yard a car park and picnic area, all of which is well maintained and looked after by local community groups. In its heyday in 1939 there were 11 trains each way and 4 freight workings.Today there are about 6 per day and 3 on summer sundays. You can still see the platform edge paving stones on the up side and the now walled gap in the overbridge which formed the original access. The incorrect spelling 'Dolwyddelen' was in use by the railway company until 1980. You are looking for a food container wrapped in a bag.
