En 1832, à leur retour de leur voyage en Orient, Lamartine et sa femme enterrent Julia, leur fille, à Saint-Point. Ne supportant plus d’habiter ce château, ils s’installent à Monceau, dont Lamartine hérite de sa tante (qui était sans enfant) en 1833 et où il fera de longs séjours, recevant ses collègues du Conseil Général ainsi que George Sand, Balzac, Dumas, Sue,…
In 1832, upon return from their trip to East, Lamartine and his wife bury Julia, their daughter at Saint-Point. As they couldn't more bear the life in the castle, they settled the castle in Monceau,which Lamartine inherits from his aunt (who was childless) in 1833 and where he will stay long, receiving his colleagues in the General Council as well as George Sand, Balzac , Dumas, Sue, ...
Monceau est le lieu de la retraite politique de Lamartine (son engagement politique a été croissant depuis les années 1820 - et surtout depuis le voyage en Orient - jusqu’à 1848. Le couronnement de sa carrière a été son rôle de chef du gouvernement provisoire, mais il a été "lâché" par ses partisans de 1848, qui lui ont préféré un certain Louis Napoléon…).
Monceau is the place of retirement policy Lamartine (his political involvement has been growing since the 1820s - and especially since the trip to East - until 1848. The crowning achievement of his career was his role as head of the Provisional Government, but he was "given up" by his supporters in 1848, they prefer to chose a certain Louis Napoleon ...).
C’est aussi le lieu des soucis financiers, Lamartine devenant à la fin de sa vie un forçat de l’écriture pour pouvoir faire face à ses dépenses.
Il fait construire au milieu des vignes le pavillon des Girondins (que l’on nomme aujourd’hui la solitude), où, entre 1839 et 1846, il rédige le Voyage en Orient et y travaille à l’Histoire des Girondins et à Jocelyn (en particulier en septembre 1835).
it's also the place of his financial worries, Lamartine becoming at the end of his life a slave to write to be able to meet its expenses.
It built in the middle of the vineyard " the pavilion of Girondins" (known today as "la solitude"), where, between 1839 and 1846, he wrote the Voyage en Orient and works in the History of the Girondins and Jocelyn ( particularly in September 1835).
Le château, aujourd’hui lieu de repos et de vacances pour personnes âgées, comporte toujours quatre salons et quarante-trois chambres. Il n’est pas ouvert à la visite, mais le parc et les vignes qui l’entourent valent le déplacement.
The castle, now instead of rest and vacation for seniors, has always four salons and forty-three rooms. It is not open to visitors, but the park and the vineyards that surround worth the trip.
