The first “cartoon” of the world
Rome – Church of San Clemente in Laterano
The church of San Clemente (St. Clement) in Rome is not so famous as other churches in Rome are, but it is very interesting for several reasons. The church is made by three layers: at the road level there is the basilica of nowadays, build up in XII century and now managed by the Irish Dominican Friars, at the second level there is the older basilica of the V century, at the last level there is an old roman civil house and a Mithraeum temple. The cult of Mithra came from Persia at the same time of Christianity and was extended from mediterraneum up to Great Britain. Mithra personifies the Light (Ormudz) who kills the Bull (Ahriman) personifying the Darkness. It was the last attempt of paganism (Zoroastrism), by the cult of only one God, to face the Christianity, but it failed because it was an esoteric an secret cult of few devotes of the middle-upper class, instead the Christianity was more popular and open to everybody. There is still on site the altar with the figure of Mithra with the Phrygian cap killing the Bull. At the second level there is the older church of San Clemente; his body was carried in Rome by St. Cyril and both were buried here. St. Cyril is the inventor of the glagolitic (from slave glagol – word) alphabet to release the Gospel among the Slavian people. Some frescos dated about 1090 tell the story of the legend of St. Clement: The paganic Sisinnius sends his servants to capture Clement, but for miracle the Saint’s body has been replaced by a column that the servants can’t move, and… here is the CARTOON! On the wall there are the words told by the personages, Sisinnus says: “ Fili de le pute, traite, Gosmari, Albertel, traite Falite dereto colo palo, Carvoncelle!” (Sons of a bitch, pull, Cosmarus, Albert, pull Push back by the pole, Carboncellus). In the following scene the Saint says: “(ob) duritia(m) cordis v(est)ris saxa tra(h)ere meruistis” (due to the hardness of your heart you deserved to pull stones). These frescos, discovered thanks to the action of the irish Father Mullooly on the last century, are for sure the first cartoon of the world and a testimony of the origin of the Italian language, the fifth after the Verona’s Riddles (780 - se pareba boves..), the Commodilla’s Graffiti (IX cent. - non dicere illa secrita abboce), the Capua’s Cards (960 - Sao ko kelle terre..), and the Postilla Amiatina (1087 – ista cartula est de caput coctu..), and.. maybe the first dirty word written on the walls of a church! The entrance to the church is free, the access to the subterraneans costs 5 EURO. The cache is placed near the church.
Il primo "fumetto" del mondo
La chiesa di San Clemente a Roma, non è così famosa come altre chiese romane, ma è molto interessante per diverse ragioni. La chiesa è costituita da tre strati: al livello stradale c’è la basilica odierna, costruita nel XII secolo e adesso gestita dai frati domenicani irlandesi, al secondo livello c’è la più vecchia basilica del V secolo e all’ultimo livello c’è una vecchia abitazione civile romana ed un tempio Mitreo. Il culto di Mitra venne dalla Persia contemporaneamente alla Cristianità e si estese dal Mediterraneo alla Gran Bretagna. Mitra personifica la Luce (Ormudz) che uccide il il Toro (Ahriman) personificante le Tenebre. Fu l’ultimo tentativo del Paganesimo(Zoroastrismo), attraverso il culto di un solo Dio, di opporsi al Cristianesimo, ma fallì perché era un culto segreto e misterico di pochi devoti della classe medio-alta, mentre il Cristianesimo era un culto popolare aperto a tutti. C’è ancora sul posto l’altare con il bassorilievo di Mitra col cappello frigio che uccide il toro. Al secondo livello c’è la più vecchia chiesa di San Clemente, il suo corpo fu portato a Roma da San Cirillo ed entrambi sono sepolti qui. San Cirillo è l’inventore dell’alfabeto glagolitico (dallo slavo glagol – parola) per diffondere il Vangelo tra i popoli Slavi. Alcuni affreschi datati circa 1090 raccontano la storia della leggenda di San Clemente: il pagano Sisinno manda i suoi servi a catturare San Clemente, ma per miracolo il suo corpo è sostituito da una colonna che i servi non riescono a smuovere e.. qui c’è il FUMETTO! Sulla parete sono scritte le parole pronunciate dai personaggi, Sisinno dice: “ Fili de le pute, traite, Gosmari, Albertel, traite - Falite dereto colo palo, Carvoncelle!” (Figli di puttana, tirate, Cosmario, Albertello, tirate – Spingete di dietro col palo, Carboncello). Nella scena seguente il santo dice: “(ob) duritia(m) cordis v(est)ris saxa tra(h)ere meruistis” (per la durezza del vostro cuore avete meritato di trascinare pietre). Questi affreschi, scoperti grazie all’impegno del padre irlandese Mullooly nel secolo scorso, sono certamente il primo “fumetto” del mondo e una testimonianza dell’origine del volgare italiano, la quinta dopo gli Indovinelli Veronesi (780 - se pareba boves..), i Graffiti di Commodilla (IX sec. - non dicere illa secrita abboce), le Carte Capuane (960 - Sao ko kelle terre..), e la Postilla Amiatina (1087 – ista cartula est de caput coctu..), e… probabilmente la prima parolaccia scritta sui muri di una chiesa! L’ingresso alla chiesa è libero, l’accesso ai sotterranei costa 5 EURO. La cache è nascosta vicino alla chiesa.
