LA FUENTE DE
CIBELES |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

Cibeles's source(fountain) is in the
Spanish city of Madrid, in the square(seat) of the same name.
He(she) established himself(herself) in 1782 in the Lounge of the
Meadow, close to Buenavista's palace, with a view to(in order) the
source(fountain) of Neptune (nowadays in the center of Cánovas's
square(seat) of the Castle, in the Walk of the Meadow close to
Villahermosa's palace, current Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, and to
the Hotel Palace). It(he,she) includes to the goddess Cibeles,
symbol of the Earth, the agriculture and the fecundity, on a car
thrown(shot) by lions. The current square(seat) called itself
initially(originally) Plaza of Madrid and in the year 1900 the name
took Castelar's square(seat). At present it is delimited by the big
buildings of Buenavista's palace (Headquarters of the Army), Palace
of Linares (House of America), Palace of Communications (Mayoralty
of Madrid) and Bank of Spain. The curious thing is that each of
these monuments belongs(concerns) to a neighborhood different from
Madrid.
The managers of his(its) accomplishment were Francisco Gutiérrez
(figure of the goddess and the car), Roberto Michel (the lions) and
the decorator Miguel Ximénez, in agreement with Ventura Rodríguez's
design. The goddess and the lions were esculpidos in purple marble
of Montesclaros's people(village) (Toledo), and the rest in
reowner's stone, locality nailed to 53 km to the north of Madrid,
near the saw of The Cabrera. The principal figure is the goddess
Cibeles, work of the sculptor Francisco Gutiérrez. It is mounted in
a car arranged on a rock that rises in the middle of the basin. In
his(its, her) hands it(he,she) takes a sceptre and a key and in the
pedestal esculpieron a large mask that was spitting waters down
over the lions up to coming to the basin, more a frog and a snake
that always they spend(pass) unnoticed. Two lions esculpidos for
the Frenchman Roberto Michel, they pull the car. The lions
represent the mythological prominent figures Hipómenes (or Melaión)
and The source(fountain) not only was an artistic monument but
it(he,she) had from the beginning a usefulness(utility) for the
persons from Madrid. It(he,she) had two tubes that were kept rustic
until 1862. Of one surtían the official aguadores that were in the
habit of being Asturian and Galician and were taking the water up
to the houses and of other one the public of Madrid. In the basin
they were drinking the cavalries. The water was coming from a water
trip that, according to the tradition, was dating back to the
Middle Ages of the epoch in which Madrid was Moslem. It(he,she) had
reputation of possessing good curative properties of any
evil. |

It(he,she) had reputation of
possessing good curative properties of any evil. The tubes were
inconvinient and of difficult access and were placed in the place
where today they jump the spouts. Precisely because of it in the
year 1862, the Town hall decided to change them into two artistic
figures and of symbolic design for the villa from which the water
was springing widly: a bear and a faucet (mythological animal
equivalent to the lizard) that besides were placed so that the
approximation of the peoples was facilitated. |

In 1895 it was the movement of the
source(fountain) to the center of the square(seat). On the occasion
of the pertinent works new remodelings were done. One placed the
monument on four steps(stairs) and him(her) it(he,she)
surrounded(turned round) itself with a railing to avoid in this
case the access. The source(fountain) already was not fulfilling
his(its) assignment because the majority of the houses had or was
starting having current water, for what the added one of the faucet
and the bear took from himself(itself), returning this way to the
Ventura Rodríguez's primitive(original) project. Besides two
flirtations were added in the back; one (whose(which) author is
Michael Ángel Trilles) spills water of an amphora, and other one
(his(its) author is Antonio Parera) supports a shell. But with this
change it(he,she) did not get lost brought of waters of the ancient
trip and for suplir the source(fountain) as such was constructed a
fuentecilla with tube on the corner of the square(seat), the side
of Post office. This fuentecilla continued being the whole symbol
for the people(village) of Madrid that there was coming to fill
pitchers, earthenware jars and bottles, as his(its, her) forbears.
The fuentecilla gave place to which the music was dedicating a
song: " Water of the fuentecilla, the best that drinks Madrid
… "
In the middle of the century XX the water of the source(fountain)
was made(become) more artistic with the added one of spouts and
diverse jets forming waterfalls and adding the lighting of
colorines that did the delights of the people(village) of Madrid.
In the most top reservoir there are two vertical spouts that reach
all 5 m of height, accompanied of a series of sloping jets that
they send the water from the goddess up to the external part. The
life of this goddess, nevertheless, is sealed by raw(unripe)
passions, festerings and blood. They are a lot of(many) the
versions that exist of these myths and also there are numerous
variants.
One of them is the history that gives place to the origin of both
lions that pull his(its) coach. They tell that they are Atalanta
and Hipómedes. Atalanta was an extremely beautiful young woman and
his(its) beauty was overcome only by his(its) speed; therefore, for
huír of the marriage(couple) that often him(her) his(its, her) heavy
ones were needing and incidiosos admirers, it(he,she) was
challenging his(its, her) claimants to a pedestrian career that,
certainly, none could gain(earn). Hipómedes was also the most
beautiful man and much craftier than fast. Confuabulado with
Aphrodite he(she) accepted the challenge. Say the midwives of the
place, which on it having seen Hipómedes, Atalanta already did not
desire to run any more than to his(its) meeting; but proud she(it),
equal it(he,she) challenged it to the challenge. While of
it(he,she) was developing the competition, the malicious gentleman
was throwing(shooting) a few beautiful golden apples that him(her)
Aphrodite achieved and when the gazelle was amusing(delaying)
itself joining them, he(it) was advanced way up to going out
victoriously and to remain at the time the lady. |

The Plaza of the Cibeles in 1857 One
of the most ancient photos that I know about Madrid. The
source(fountain) of the Cibeles was in his(its) original
emplacement, far from the center of the square(seat) and looking to
Neptune. To the left of the photo one was thinking Alcañices's
palace that fell down to construct the Bank of
Spain. |
