Geocache Description:

This is a continuation of the series that Dorsetgal has started in Dorset (GC1K6MX) , after hearing about it how it got established in the US on the Podcacher Podcast. Hopefully in time it will become established nationwide! This is an easy 35mm film cannister hide. THE SITE DOES NOT HAVE 24 HOUR ACCESSIBILITY AND SEEMS TO BE SHUT BY 16.30

Guidelines for this series are below:
1. FTF'er should place the next cache in the series (in this case, The Curse of the FTF #2) within 1 month... Otherwise the curse will prevent you from ever getting another FTF again!!! Muhahahahahahahaha!
2. You can only be a FTF for this series once. This spreads the FTF love around, and gives others a chance to play along.
3. Cache can be any type of cache (Puzzle, Multi, etc.), but I do ask that:
You set it in Greater London (there are 33 London boroughs making up Greater London; Enfield in the North down to Croydon and Bromley in the South, Hillingdon in the West through to Havering in the East)
4. You must include this set of guidelines in your listing for the series I will be happy to answer any questions concerning the guidelines or about the placing of caches to those who have not placed a cache before. By way of clarification, there is no requirement besides the standard signing of the cache log to prevent you from logging this cache when found. Everyone should log their find, and hopefully the FTF person will play along and place another cache, but it is in no way a requirement for logging your find.

Right on to the cache itself! Please be aware that the gate has been locked as early as 16.30- we are currently trying to establish official opening/closing times. Sorry for any wasted journeys.
The New River Head was a man made pool where the New River ended a journey which started over 20 miles away in Ware in Hertfordshire and from this pool it was pumped into wooden conduits to serve surrounding areas. The New River is a man-made waterway, that was created in 1613, to provide fresh water for London from the River Lee. It was built by Hugh Myddelton, after whom several streets nearby are named. Even before the construction of the river there was a pond in this location.
The river has been filled in after Canonbury but at the cache site you can view the open space where the pool once was and there are interpretation boards to help you spot the old Water Company headquarters, the pumphouse, the base of the old windmill that provided power and a building once used as a laboratory. There are also some nice landscaped gardens, which are meant to be open between 08.00 and 16.00, although we found them closed one day at 10.00. The cache is reached via a gate close by at N51 31 742 W 000 06 514. There are no times listed as to when it is open/locked but Lendu found it locked at 16.30 (sorry Lendu!). If you could post at what time you gained entry (or not) I should be able to build up a better profile of when it is accessible. We have e-mailed the New River Action Group and will then contact Thames Water to find out what times the gate should be locked and if indeed it is being locked too early. It is wheelchair accessible. The cache is a 35mm container. Please replace carefully after finding. No clue is given as we don't think it is that hard a find. The closest tube is Angel. For a less direct but more interesting route from Angel, walk down to the gardens at Colebrook Row and follow the New River Path signs from there. Car paking is available outside the resident permit hours of 8.30-18.30 Mon-Fri and 8.30-13.30 Sat in adjacent streets. It is in the congestion charging zone.
