Hanwell station is situated on the route of I K Brunel's Great
Western Railway which operated its first service between London
Paddington and Taplow on 4th June 1838. However it was not until
1877 that the station in Hanwell (and Elthorne) was opened. The
opening coincided with the rebuilding of the nearby Wharncliffe
Viaduct which was enlarged to accomodate four sets of rail tracks.
The original station entrance was in Station Approach but today
access to the station can only be gained from Campbell Road.
On 15th September 1972 English Heritage nominated the station as
a grade II listed building because it is one of the least altered
examples remaining of a general station building of the 1870s with
station canopies and ironwork especially on central platform. In
1980 British Rail restored Hanwell station in a sympathetic manner
but at the time of writing these cache notes the station buildings
and structures look weather worn and in need of some tender loving
care.
Although the station is managed by the First Great Western TOC
few of its trains call at Hanwell. The majority of the trains
calling at operated by the Heathrow Connect TOC who provide a half
hourly all stations stopping service between London Paddington and
London Heathrow Airport Terminals 1,2,3 and 4.
