SA Geocachers are invited to the June long weekend
caching event
at Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula.
Situated 167kms north of Adelaide by road
this event will provide three days of fun and
caching.
The Maitland
Showground Pavilion, located in the centre of town, will be the hub
for event activities. The showground also has camping facilities
for those with caravans and tents. So if you want to be close to
all the action this is the place to be.

EVENT PROGRAM.
Friday - Setup for those who arrive early. Organise your own
meals.
Saturday morning 11am - sign in, pay up $20 per team then meet,
greet and brief. Head out to place caches and do a picture
activity. Each team will place caches, number depending on
attendance. One cache from each team may be a permanent
traditional. There will be points for best camo, and most
innovative hide. Nothing over three star, and no micros,
please.
Saturday Early Evening 4pm - Return cache placement co-ords and
Quarantine GPSrs or Memory cards, games for kids and adults mingle
and brag about caching exploits.
Saturday Evening 6pm - A dinner event "THE GEOCACHING DINNER" at
the Yorke Valley Hotel for those who have booked.
Sunday Early morning 8:30 am - sausage and egg sandwich and
coffee/tea at the Showground.
Sunday 9am - Event briefing and grop photo. Cache hunting to start
from 9:30am.
Sunday 4pm - All caching to be finished. Logbooks and caches
returned to Showground. There will be severe point deduction for
not being back on time, and there will be points for picking up
your temporary cache after the completion of caching.
Sunday Early evening 4:30 pm - BBQ meal on the Showground. Self
cook BBQs will be available.
Sunday evening 6:30 pm - Geocacher's Presentation night, Basket
supper and prize presentations.
Each team should bring a wrapped prize to the value of
$10-$15.
Monday morning - recovery, clean up and drive home.
ADDITIONAL EVENTS
CITO
There will be CITO points awarded for the return of a bag of
rubbish per team collected over the weekend.
THE GEOCACHING
DINNER
A dinner event to be held at the Yorke Valley Hotel. The menu will
be a smorgasbord with soup and dessert . Cost $25 a head. Please
see event listing for more detail.
Payment wll be direct to the venue on event night.
Cache Placement
There will be caches hidden on the Saturday by those participating
in the event. The number of caches to be hidden by each team will
depend on the number of participating teams.
The temporary caches supplied to the teams will be hidden on the
Saturday and retrieved after the hunt on the Sunday.
Caches placement is to be within the guidelines for placing a
Traditional 3 star cache. Whilst clever hides contribute to the
event you should be mindfull of the opportunity for people to find
a large number of caches on the day. Therefore accuracy in your
waypoint is also important . It you have never placed a cache dont
hesitate to ask for some advise.
Teams may choose to replace one of the temporary caches with their
own traditional cache that will remain after the event. The
traditional cache will need to be at a minimum about 10 cm in
length. Contents of the temporary cache will be placed in the
traditional cache and retrieved along with the other temporary
caches at the end of the hunt.
Traditional caches will still need to be listed and approval
granted as per GC guidelines after the event. Due to the vagaries
of the 160m rule some discussion may be required between teams
after placement.
The temporary caches can be camouflaged and there were many great
examples of this last year from interesting plumbing right through
to memorial sites and cow pats. The camouflaging will need to be
able to hide something the size of a small Milo tin or a
rectangular take away food container. The bonus points for best
camo will be awarded to the team receiving the most votes from the
other teams.
There is also a bonus award for the most innovative hide judged the
same way.
The idea of camouflage and innovation is to add fun to the day, not
to create a caching challenge that is too difficult for other
participants to find. So no micros or specialised equipment to
retrieve a cache ie ladder, and the star rating should be under a
3.
ACCOMMODATION
Maitland Showgrounds. The grounds have newly built shower
facilities, a clean and neat kitchen facility and there are sites
available for caravans and tent camping on the oval.
A flat rate of $15 a night per site applies to all who stay on the
oval.
To book a site please e-mail SA_ParrotHead with your camping
requirements.
The society wll not be accepting bookings they need to come
through SA_ParrotHead.
There are also numerous cabins, camping and hotel room
accommodation in nearby Port Victoria.

One week to go reminder to all event participants.

The Playing field image has been uploaded. An A4 paper map image
will be available in your registration packs.
The registration pack also contains a local area guide.
Cachers are reminded to bring a UHF radio and Camera if
available.
If you have a PC cable for your GPS please make sure it is
available for upload and download.
We will also accept memory cards if you want to retain your GPS for
overnight caching.
Memory cards will be loaded with a GPX, waypoint and Tom Tom
file.

UHF radio Please forward your mobile number to

We will be texting messages during the cache hunt as well as
broadcasting in UHF.
A CITO cache will be run in conjunction with the main event so
don't forget to bring some bags to put the rubbish in you
collect.
Registration cost is the usual $20 a team and a $10-$15 wrapped
gift.
Payment is by individual team even if teams are combining.
Please leave your gift when you register on the Saturday.
Make sure if you are attending the dinner event you get your dinner
token at registration.
If you are camping on the showgrounds you need to pay for your stay
when you register.
If you must bring a dog keep it on a lead and watchful eye.
Dogs are not to be brought into the hall or shed areas.
You must clean up after your dog.
Dog owners should be aware there will be sheep in the area.
The local police will be notified of the event so they will be
able to respond to any queries by locals.
We want this to be a safe event for all concerned anyone charged
with a road traffic act will be disqualified from the game.
Drive safe and observe speed limit.
There are going to be a lot of children out there this
weekend.

Maitland Art
and Craft Fair Winter 2009 – Maitland Town Hall.
Art and Craft Fair with over 50 stalls to
browse over and buy a bargain. There will be plenty of children's
activities to amuse them for hours from face painting to a matinee
movie - a great family outing.
When hunger strikes there will be plenty to choose from - a
barbeque or maybe some donuts and a cappuccino to tempt the taste
buds. The Fair is a two-day event.
Maitland National Trust
Museum
Located on the corner of Gardener and Kilkerran
Terrace, this National Trust Museum (it used to be an old
schoolhouse) contains a good collection of local memorabilia. Of
particular interest are the Aboriginal and German heritage
exhibitions. As most of the Aborigines had disappeared from the
Yorke Peninsula by the time of European settlement this is a
particularly valuable collection. Open Sunday and school and public

St John's Anglican Church
(1876)
This is well worth a visit to look at the
stained glass windows. They depict biblical stories but the
settings are all Australian. It is located on the corner of Alice
and Caroline Streets.
Lions Bicycle Adventure Park
Located off Elizabeth Street, the Lions Park is
an ideal place to spend a few hour with the children. It is a
pleasant retreat.
Other Attractions
There is a self-guided nature and history
trail. Information and leaflets from District Council. Also a wide
range of interesting stone buildings exist in the town. In Walter
Street there are some particularly fine examples.
The District Council of Yorke Peninsula Building which was
completed in 1908 at the cost of £276 and used as Council Chambers
from 1 July 1908 and the verandah was added in 1928 at the cost of
£60. It ceased to be used as the Council Chambers on 16 March,
1969

Photo Fun on Saturday.
On Saturday besides putting out caches we will be running a fun
activity using digital photography. If you have a ditial Camera,
Phone or other device that takes pictures please bring it along to
participate so you can join in the fun.
Freddo will provide all the details at the breifing on Saturday
morning so no cheating and pestering him before then.
We will provide a laptop for images to be downloaded to when you
come back on the Saturday afternoon. You will need to be able to
copy your pictures up to the laptop. We will have a card reader but
you should bring your own USB connection/cable (and software) if
you think your device will need them to connect to the laptop. Most
cameras have a storage card or act like a flash drive when plugged
in. So hopefully it will be a simple task to collect all the
pictures.

The Caches column represents the points awarded for finds on caches
01 to 60. 2 points were awarded for an outer band area from GZ and
1 point for inner hides.
Freddo
Hi Folks. The heart of
Yorke was the third June event planned by SA_Parrothead and Freddo.
It has been our ambition to hold a version this annual event on YP
for many years. Little did we realize that the event would be wet,
wet, wet. The first truly wet event in a long time. Wet, slippery
and fun.
Thanks to all participating teams. Your patience under sometimes
trying conditions is much appreciated. With such a big group a
queue would form occasionally. Your attention to safety and
accuracy is applauded.
Special thanks from the organising team to everyone who assisted
over the weekend.
Fantastic to meet lots of new people and to catch with many old
timers.
The big red Freddo-mobile enjoyed being the tow vehicle for the
Sunday hunt. It is now impressively filthy and looks like a real
4wd.
The roll call of teams is as follows. 35 competing teams. A truly
magnificent event. Let's do it all again next year.

Now that was fun.
Its great to be part of a team that can bring so much joy to so
many people. It has also been fun working with Team Freddo to make
this possible and everyone else who pitched in along the way.
To see all those happy faces and families coming together is a
wonderful thing.
Last year we had tales of country singers to tell but this year I
am sure it will all be about the wet and just as a fisherman's
catch gets bigger so will the stories of the amount of mud clinging
to our vehicles.
It's no easy task bringing an event like this together with lots of
planning going on in the background to make it all work. What I
really love is the way people will pitch in to make what we
organise successful. Say you want a BBQ cooked and teams rush in to
help and before you know it Wibble, Winterdragon, White Dog and
Alex(Jock) are making it all happen.
Its a great thing to be part of such a wonderful community and to
be able to read so many logs of what a great time people have had
interacting with each other and know you have been a part of
it.
Once again thank you for taking what we presented you with and
giving us back such a fantastic event.
and Alex I know where you can get a 4WD next year if you want a
driver to go with it.
