Ancient religious site near Kells, County Kilkenny.
This old religious site at Kilree contains a high cross, round tower and church. It was first established in the 8th century.
The sandstone high cross stands in the field to the west of the tower. It was probably carved back in the 9th century. Even though it is badly weathered there are plenty of bosses and motifs visible on it still. There is evidence it was originally fitted with a capstone.
The top of the round tower is missing but is still over 26 metres high. It was built sometime between the 8th and 11th centuries.
The site is about 4km southeast of Kells village and 14km south of Kilkenny town.
The cache is a small round camouflaged tupperware box.
