Geocache Description:

A micro cache along the cycle trail from Chard to Donyatt, accessible directly from the path but probably beyond the reach of a seated wheelchair user

A small cache (now a 35mm canister) containing only a logbook and pencil is hidden well away from nettles and brambles and easily accessible from the path, which is suitable for cycles, strollers and wheelchairs and cachers of all ages.

This cache is near to Knowle St Giles, a Somerset village on the Taunton Stop Line - created in World War 2 "to stop an enemy's advance from the west and in particular a rapid advance supported by armoured fighting vehicles (up to the size of a German medium tank) which may have broken through the forward defences."

Aside from the obstacles created by canals, rivers and railway embankments, by early 1942 the line was defended by 309 light machine gun pillboxes, (typically for the Bren gun), 61 medium machine gun emplacements (typically for the Vickers machine gun), 21 static anti-tank gun emplacements (equipped with ex-World War I naval six-pound guns), along with numerous anti-tank obstacles in the form of concrete posts, cubes and pyramids, while charge chambers were cut into bridges ready for demolition.

You will find various examples of these wartime defensive obstacles along the path, such as the Anti Tank Blocks now relocated beneath the bridge and the 6 pounder Hotchkiss anti tank gun emplacement beside the bridge.

Please replace the cache container sensibly to avoid any risk of it being muggled.

The local roads are vulnerable to winter flooding, please take care and cache sensibly.

Access for buggies and wheelchairs is better via the cycle path, starting in Chard or Donyatt - rather than the steps beside the bridge
