Geocache Description:

Homemade tictac cache dedicated to biggest temple in South India.

Sri Arunachaleswara Temple

The great Temple at Tiruvannamalai houses the self-created Lingam called Sri Arunachalaeswarar, after which the Temple is named. This Siva Lingam is one of the five Sthalams known as 'Pancha Bootha Lingams' (the five elements comprising the Universe), which stretch across southern India; it is known as 'Theyu Lingam' (Lingam of fire), and intense heat is felt emanating from it.
The Temple covers an area of 24 acres; it has 9 gopurams (towers), the largest of which is 135 feet by 98 feet at the base and is 217 feet high, it has eleven tiers - this tower is called Raja Gopuram and forms the main entrance to the Temple compound (above right). The other three outer gopurams have, 10, 9 and 8 tiers, whilst the inner three facing east-west have six tiers each, and the two smallest facing north-south have four tiers each.
Inside the temple enclosure walls is many temples, shrines, gardens, ponds, sheds and huge walls protect temple from noise from town around. So you can find surprisingly quiet place here and spend here really pleasure time.

If you want really know the temple, there is one special way (hope there will be no obstruction as gate locked etc.). Enter temple throught eastern Raja Gopura, then turn left and go circle along the outer wall. After finishing this circle enter the second courtyard throught the eastern tower gate. Make the similar circle in this courtyard. Then similary enter the third courtyard and make circle around the main temple, where is the holy lingam housed. There you will find the cache here and than you can go for darshan (gaze) upon the holy lingam. I recommend to spend 20 Rs for special darshan, because you will have close view of the lingam and maybe you can be invited into the room next to sanctum and feel that heat emanating by the lingam.

The coordinates of cache are just roughly taken, because there are huge walls and towers. The new cache is hidden in the SW corner of the third inner yard of the temple in the base of a big lighting pole ! It is small orange tictac container on wire hook, on western side hooked on screw bolt.
The best way to remove cache is to use the Backpack trick to escape undesirable attention.
Leave your shoes outside of temple in some cloack room. Fee is usually 10 Rs.
The temple is usually open from early morning (5 AM) to night (9.30 PM), there is some noon break.

Small note on cache maintenance: There is a local cache guardian. Contact info on file with geocaching.com
