This family-friendly cache is located on the Mount Rose Trail section of the Nature Reserve of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association in Hopewell Township. Parking is in the lot on Moores Mill – Mount Rose Road (N 40 22.040 W 074 46.214).
The Watershed Reserve is open most days, dusk to dawn. The 930-acre nature reserve is home to the Buttinger Nature Center, the Kate Gorrie Memorial Butterfly House, the Honey Brook Organic Farm, the Buttinger Nature Center and almost 14 miles of trails. The Reserve is in two main sections. There is a diversity of habitats including meadows, forests, wetlands, a small pond, streams and the Stony Brook. The Reserve harbors a rich assortment of wildlife and plant life. Deer are abundant and other common mammals include meadow voles, shrews, bats, raccoon, skunk, opossum, red fox, squirrels and flying squirrels. Habitat diversity makes this an ideal place for birdwatching – watch for grassland species in the new grasslands, ducks at the pond, as well as herons, hawks, and owls, and much more. Please utilize the trails to access this cache. The Mount Rose Trails offer access to additional caches but can be difficult to follow at times – look for the trail markers. This cache takes you to the edge of a modest but admirable swamp with some exemplary vegetation during spring and summer. This cache requires about a one mile round-trip walk. It is recommneded that you explore and continue to the Mount Rose Ridge. The cache was stocked initially with a turtle, an obsidian arrowhead, a Shrek bust, some Canadian coins, a miniguitar, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, a whale necklace, a porsche (sorry, no keys) and a ticket redeemable for a prize at the nearby February 7 event cache Hot Cider and Donuts and Nature, Oh My.
