Fossekallen/White-throated Dipper

Fossekallen (Cinclus cinclus) er ein fugl i fossekallfamilien som
er utpeikt som nasjonalfugl i Noreg. Fossekallen finst i store
delar av Europa og nordvestre Asia. Fuglen er brunsvart med kvit
hakelapp, liten og rundvoren, med stutt stjert. Han held særleg til
langs fossestryk, elvar og vatn. Fossekallen er delvis trekkfugl,
og medan dei gjerne held seg i nordlege område om sommaren flyg
mange av dei sørover om vinteren. Mange fuglar trekk til dømes frå
Noreg og nord-Sverige til sør-Sverige om vinteren. Ein kan likevel
finna fossekallar i vassdrag og vatn i Noreg året rundt. Fuglen
dykkar til botnen etter føde og bruker vengene til å symja. Han et
hovudsakleg larvar av små vassdyr. Fossekallen kan òg eta insekt på
land som han finn mellom steinar og ved vassbredden. Reiret er
rundt med ein liten opning på eine side. Det blir bygd på ein
avsats, i ei kløft eller under ei bru, nær vatn.

På vinterstid kan cachen nås på langrennski fra Segalstad seter
parkering (Waypoint PA).
Frå Skei følges brun løype (Start Waypoint A1) til Sjøsetra i 4,5
km.
Er du heldig kan flere Fossekaller observeres her.
Alternativt kan man kan også gå på ski fra Bånsetra eller
Skogen.
Om sommeren når bomvegen (NOK40) er åpen, kan du kjøre til Sjøsetra
(ta av ved waypoint EX) og gå til cache.
Cachen er en militær matboks med Geocache-sticker. Cachen
inneholder loggbok, infoark, blyant og bytteting.

The White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is choosen to Norways
nationalbird. The White-throated Dipper is found in Europe and the
Northwest Asia. The Dipper is a rotund, short-tailed bird, dark
above and white-breasted, closely associated with swiftly running
rivers and streams or the lakes into which these fall. It breeds in
northern Europe and wanders to milder regions in winter. Still the
White-throated Dipper can be found i streams and lakes during the
winter in Norway. It will drop on the water and dive and using the
wings effectively for flying under water. In this way it secures
its food, usually aquatic invertebrates including caddis worms and
other aquatic insect larvae, beetles, Limnaea, Ancylus and other
freshwater molluscs, and also small fish. It also walks and runs on
the banks and rocks seeking terrestrial invertebrates. The nest is
by the water. It is large, globular or oval, like a large Wren's
nest, built into a crack or hollow in the rock, in the masonry, or
on the supports of a bridge, or, more rarely, in an overhanging
branch.

In the wintertime the cache can be reached with crosscountry ski
starting at Segalstad seter parking (Waypoint PA).
From Skei you can follow brown track (Start Waypoint A1) to
Sjøsetra in 4,5 km.

Alternativly you can start from Bånsetra or Skogen.
In the summertime when the tollroad (NOK40) is open, you can drive
to Sjøsetra (exit at waypoint EX) and walk to the cache.
