Quick cache and dash in Upper Marsh Road.Cache is a 35 mill film pot containing log and £1 for FTF. You can park within a couple of feet of cache.
By the 19th century Warminster Common was not the most desirable address to have! It was a very rough area.Services used to be held in the cottages on the common.
In 1826 the new vicar could see that a church was needed and was completed in 1831 to the design of John Leachman.
The church was not built on the common but at the top of Boot Hill in the,then, hamlet of Sambourne. The church was initially a chapel at ease to St Denys but became a parish in its own right in 1863. An organ was added in 1843 and a peal of 8 tubular bells in 1888.The church could hold a congregation of 800.
The early clergy worked among the poor people and the simple services attracted people, often from the better off families, from all over the town.
In 1871 the church was altered and a chancel and stained glass windows added.
Opposite the church was the Boot Inn which gave its name to the hill.This was closed in 1868.The Rev. Hickman who had recently been appointed vicar persuaded Lord Bath to revoke the licence.Hickman did not think it right for a pub to face the church!
It then became the temporary vicarage until a purpose built one was completed.
Quite a few of my ancestors lived on the common!
