Parts of the church date from Saxon times, when the original building was constructed about 1070. There are Roman bricks in this part of the church.
The Normans raised a sturdy tower around the small Saxon building, the nave was enlarged in the fourteenth century, and chancel was added to the east of the tower. The resulting configuration is that the tower separates chancel and nave, quite unusual for a parish church.
The Victorian Ambulatory (covered walkway) linking the south porch with the roadway, is again unusual and forms a striking external feature of the church.
