No se puede pasar por Lanzarote sin ascender a alguno de los numerosos volcanes que se hallan diseminados por la isla. Ni que decir tiene que en la zona del parque de Timanfaya apenas te dejan bajar de los autobuses, y cualquier pretensión de hacer senderismo libremente por el parque esta prohibida. Por otro lado, la zona centro de la isla se halla en gran parte cubierta por enormes masas de lava solidificada, cuarteada en enormes bloques y simas, que son absolutamente impracticables para el senderismo. La erupción volcánica que sacudió la zona centro de la isla sobre 1730, mas concretamente la correspondiente al municipio de Yaiza, cubrió grandes extensiones del que fue en su día un fértil valle, y donde hoy apenas si se cultivan algunas viñas, rodeada cada cepa de un murete de piedra que la protejen de los vientos y ayudan a mantener la humedad que es absorbida por las cenizas volcánicas. No obstante formaciones volcánicas anteriores a la última erupción pueden ser ascendidas sin dificultas en otras partes de la Isla. Concretamente en el extremo oriental de Playa Blanca nos encontramos un volcancito, de unos 200 m. de altura, y que posee un enorme crater de unos 50 metros de profundidad y unos 350 m. de diámetro. Es una enorme caldera de tonos rojizos, debido al proceso oxidativo de los fragmentos rocosos a lo largo de los siglos, y que puede ser ascendido sin dificultad por cualquiera de sus laderas.
Desde Playa Dorada tomamos dirección oeste hacia el Puerto de Playa Blanca y continuamos por agradable paseo costero hacia Punta Limones y Punta Pechiguera. A la altura de la urbanización Campana Beach tomamos dirección a la montaña Roja iniciando la ascensión por una de sus laderas menos pronunciadas claramente visible desde nos encontramos. Como en ascensiones anteriores las rocas basálticas se hallan cubiertas por la ceniza volcánica que puede provocar algún resbalón. Sin problemas llegamos al punto collado y de este a nuestra izquierda como en unos 10 minutos coronamos Montaña Roja en su vértice geodésico. La gran caldera del volcán se extiende a nuestros pies; en dirección sur tenemos el faro de Punta Pechiquera que apunta hacia la vecina isla de Fuerteventura. Las laderas del volcán soportan una fuerte presión urbanística, que ha deteriorado su entorno.
