Murnieku street got its name in 1881. There are many witnesses of
previous times, which expresses in buildings. When you are on that
street, you can almost feel the past looking at the old
buildings.
The Murnieku street is brilliant architectural sample of the
beginning of 20th century. Mostly the buildings are build in early
Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil). There where low-price flats in the
buildings. The space was economized in these flats, for example,
there where no lobby in the flats, the first room in each flat was
kitchen. There where common toilets – one toilet for several flats
in the same floor.
Some 100 years age Grizinkalns was the on the outskirts of Riga.
Riga city centre was only till Matisa street, which was so called
‘elegant centre’. Behind the Matisa street there where regions with
various factories and many blue-color worker’s houses – simple
wooden and stone buildings. At the end of the workday crowds of
workers where moving along Valmiera street, Tallinas street
(Reveles street at that time) and Pernavas street. They moved to
they modest houses. On that time Grizinkalns was almost the very
end of the civilization, behind that – only meadows and deserted
fields. But now that place is so called ‘the near centre’ and there
are many prestige new houses and also old a hundred year old wooden
houses.
