Geocache Description:

Romiley Stroll
At just under 3km, this series of caches, ranging from micro through small and up to regular in size, will lead you on a gentle walk with the following features that you will encounter en-route if you start at the entrance to Bunkers Hill (where there is room to park a couple of cars) and proceed in an anticlockwise direction.

Bunkers Hill woods and the old road which, because of accidents and deterioration due to subsidence in the 1930s, was superseded by the current A627. A little care is needed after heavy rain when descending through the wood to join the A627 at the bottom.

River Goyt. After exiting the wood cross the A627 (this is a VERY BUSY road, take care), turn left, soon to encounter a big bend in the River Goyt (Otterspool).

Vale of Chadkirk. Turn right into Vale Road to enter the Vale of Chadkirk with its terraced cottages, farm and old chapel.
The land here has probably been in cultivation since Saxon times, and possibly earlier. For example, the Ancient Britons are likely to have farmed the land before the Romans ruled Britain. There is a Car Park here to give you an alternative starting point. Leave the car park at the far end via the left hand gate and follow the path alongside a stream with the fields on the right. Eventually you will come to the farm and Chapel (mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086).

Hamlet of Burymewick. As you walk up a short steep stretch of road from the farm you will be come to the hidden hamlet of Burymewick. Here take the steps up to the canal (not the steps into the terraced garden!).

Peak Forest Canal. At the top of the steps turn left. A short stroll along the canal towpath will bring you to another flight of steps, from where you can see Hatherlow Church.

Hatherlow Church. Descend the steps and, bearing left, you will come to the A627 again. Crossing it will bring you back to the start at the bottom of Bunkers Hill.
