Ft. Moore
On this site, the American Flag
was flown over Los Angeles on July 4, 1847--the first American
Independence Day in Los Angeles. The fort was erected by
members of the Mormon Battalion shortly before their release from
active duty. They had marched 1900 miles from Iowa to San
Diego and then to Los Angeles as part of Army of the est.
Some of the discharged veterans were present at the discovery of
gold at Sutter's Mill, starting the California gold
rush.
The Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial is a large
stone memorial wall built in 1957 on part of the fort's original
location facing Hill Street. As the largest bas-relief military
monument in the United States, it honors the Mormon Battalion, the
U.S. 1st Dragoons, and the New York Volunteers who raised the
American flag over the fort on July 4, 1847, at the first
Independence Day in Los Angeles.
