Small container near one of the gates of the Daugavpils fortress. Guided tour is not necessary to get this cache. The cache is placed in the part of the Daugavpils fortress, which is open for tourists and locals.
The cache is hidden near the Aleksandrs gate of the Daugavpils fortress. The easiest way to get to the cache place is to use the road to the parking coordinates and Aleksandrs's gates near them. This is the only gate of the fortress through which car traffic is allowed to the dwelling part of the fortress, therefore the gate is used everyday by the locals and not by tourists, therefore as a rule you're unlikely to see them if you come to the fortress as tourist. The gate is named after the Russian Emperor Aleksandr I.
It is still possible to enter fortress using second gates, which is next to the entrance to restricted part - go through the gates and then to the right through abandoned check point. But there is possibility, you will not be allowed to leave your car near second gates.
Daugavpils Fortress, also known as Dinaburg Fortress, is a fortress in Daugavpils, Latvia. It is the only early 19th century military fortification of its kind in Northern Europe that has been preserved without significant alterations. Planning of the fortress began in 1772 by decree of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, shortly after the First Partition of Poland when Latvia ceded to Russia and construction began during Napoleon's attack of the Russian Empire in 1810. Construction of the fortress, despite lengthy delays, serious floodings and slow construction work, was completed in 1878.
Unfortunately there are maintaining works in the fortress at this moment, that is why entrance to the resticted part of the fortress is permitted with guided tour only. But you still can visit and drive through fortress second part, using Aleksandr's gates.
Daugavpils itself is a nice city quite different from other cities of Latvia mainly because of its population history - Latvians have never been a majority in Daugavpils.
