Geocache Description:

A small clip lock container placed along the diversion path for the Basingstoke Canal through MOD Open Access woods.

The Basingstoke Canal is in the south east of England and flows through the counties of Hampshire and Surrey. It originally ran from the Hampshire town of Basingstoke to its junction with the River Wey Navigation in Surrey 37 miles away.

Today, 32 miles of the original navigation have been restored from the Wey Navigation as far as North Wanborough in Hampshire, as a public amenity catering for boaters, walkers, canoeists, anglers and naturalists. Refer to the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society for more information.

It has 29 locks, all but one in Surrey, which together raise the canal 204 feet from the River Wey.

Due to a severe land slip on the Deepcut Cutting and further towpath erosion, the stretch between Deepcut Bridge and Lock 28 is closed. A diversion is in place through MOD Open Access land to the North of the Canal, and this cache is placed along this diversion.

Please Note: This is a Military Training Area to which Public access is open at all times but which can involve the use of Pyrotechnics. One of the safety rules for public access is:- " Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground. Please adhere to all Byelaws."

MOD Managed Access Areas are Military Training Areas to which Access is open at all times, but where Military Training takes place that might involve the use of Pyrotechnics. The areas come under military byelaws at all times. One of the safety rules for public access is

Adhere at all times to instructions and to the Byelaws covering the area. Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground.
